I'm new at this MQ stuff, so please go easy on me! I am wondering why an admin would create multiple SRVCONN channels for apps, as opposed to just using SYSTEM.DEF.SRVCONN for all. advantages? disadvantages? I'm running MQ Series V5.3 on W2k. Thanks.

What if you come in one A.M., and find 5000 instances of that channel running, when their should only be 50. It is much easier to determine who is the looping app , and STOP their dedicated channel, if they are separate. Otherwise you have a tough time finding out who is bad, they keep spawning off more channels, until the max is reached.

With one channel, security is tougher. If you lock it down via SSL, all users / apps have to use the same SSL keys, and everyone "looks" the same to you then.

If you need to apply exits specific to one app, you can do it easily if that one app has their own channel.

Even if you were going to use 1 channel, its a genral MQ rule of thumb not to use the default objects.

And for security reasons I'd set MCAUSER('nobody') on the default channel.
Don't forget to set it to what it need be when you create a new channel.

Enjoy
