Situation as follows:
Multiple branch location qmgrs (500-1000) connecting to central server. I want to provide load balancing / pseudo failover to a second central server. I am reluctant to create a cluster with that many qmgrs (especially as the number may grow). I know I could use hardware clustering instead.
I was instead thinking of each branch having a sender channel to EACH central server and sharing a XMITQ - a primary and a secondary. I understand they cannnot both run at the same time. I want to start the other in a channel failure situation only. The Tivoli agent has a concept of START ALTERNATE CHANNEL - has anyone used this for this purpose? Any ideas of alternatives?
Also, opinions on what platform would be best for a channel concentrator? Anyone done this number with Linux (they will all be active all the time).
The best solution is to hardware cluster that central server. That way all the sending QMs channels will just retry during failover and start up on their own without any intervention.
Clustering is not appropriate here.
I know most monitoring tools allow you to start a second alternate channel if the first one has problems. But that's tricky. What if the central server is just fine, and a network problem causes the channel to temporarily retry. Do you want all your traffic to go to the other server then?
I once heard that AIX is a good choice for a QM that has to deal with lots of concurrent connections. Don't know exactly why though. _________________ Peter Potkay
