Here's a question that may not have an answer but...

I have the choice of deploying my new QA and Prod 5.x brokers on either Windows 2000 or Solaris 9. Both are 2 cpu machines.

Is there still any advantage to running on Solaris vs. Windows?
How stable has 5.x been on these two platforms?
Windows seems a bit easier since I already have the test broker running on the Windows 2000 Configuration Manager server (not to mention that I do not have root access on Solaris).

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

tough call... both platforms have their quirks

can you elaborate on the requirements with regard to stability, failover, throughput, etc.

Microsoft wants you to reboot your servers once or twice a month to apply their security patches. So right off the bat plan on regular outages to this box forever.

How bad is Solaris in this regard?

Well you don't get the monthly microsoft patches
Having some form of regular maintenance or service windows is good for any platform.

I have worked with brokers on Windows, Solaris and AIX, I never found time to get the broker running on Linux but from what I heard it screams on Linux. On one side it should not matter where you put the broker on the other side it's good to have a good comfort level with the platform.

so as usual it depends all on the requirements and the environment and there is no one size fits all answer.

From what I have heard, you might end up converting Solaris to Linux in the short term anyway. I understand Sun is considering whether to continue with Solaris or go into Linux in a big way. (Also heard they may open source Solaris...)

Hi,

My idea is that windows is not a server System . You have to reboot against memory leaks !
