Hi all,

Do you believe telecommuting job is really sth that occurs today? Is there anyone on this forum who has experience in this kind of job?

I'm asking, because the idea seems to me attractive, but I don't believe it's anything more than hype.

Piotr

I telecommute. My employers actually promote telecommuting.

It's great. I save money on gas and I am not stressed out from having to deal with traffic not to mention the reduction in wear and tare on my truck. My office is 25 minutes away when traffic is good. During rush hour that commute changes to just over an hour.

Most of the people I work with are thousands miles away so as long as I can connect to the companies intranet and do my job they don't really care if my butt is in a chair at the office or a chair in my Den.

Hi,

I've done a fair bit of telecommuting and it requires 2 things:
(1) Management that trusts its employees
(2) A reasonably discipline telecommuter.

Some companies love the cost saving and the availability of the person that comes with telecommuting. But I have work for some companies that if you were not in the office, they assumed you were not working. Trust. Some managers / directors just don't trust that you are actually working for them when you are not on site.

As a telecommuter, you have to be careful not to start working 24 hours a day. Some managers figure that if you are home then you should be working. i.e. I have been phoned during breakfast, dinner (supper), 11:00PM evening news, etc… and they were shocked when I said I have a life too!!!! The other thing you have to be careful of, is not to get too distracted by the TV or internet or start doing family things (i.e. take the kids to the doctor).

It is sooooooooooooooooooooo easy to say 'I'll take an hour off and catch up later'. It is easy to take an hour off and end up almost losing an entire day!!!! If your wife / spouse is home during the day, that will add a whole other level of distraction to the picture. (you can infer whatever you want from that comment - how do you think I ended up with 5 kids!!!). Actually, what I meant was, 'Honey, can you do this? Honey, can you do that?' Pretty soon you are hanging pictures, moving couches, picking up kids toys, mowing the lawn, etc… rather than doing your job!!!

Bottom line is that you need to be disciplined and be able to say no to people and / or things - including your wife / spouse during office hours and your boss during off hours!!!!

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Regards,
Roger Lacroix

It's amazing how hard this is to find.
