Yes
You need to shut down MQ (all the QMGRs and all the MQ processes like listeners etc) to do any maintenance.

Read the ReadMe file shipped with the CSD

Yes, bring the QMs down.

Read the read me on the details of how to install the CSD. Do you have a specific question?

Perhaps you can check out the "installation instructions" , about halfway down this page:

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=172&context=SW900&q1=%22WebSphere+MQ+v5.3%22+CSD+Fix+Pack+Maintenance&uid=swg24007905&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&lang=en+en

And then if you have more questions, post again.

Good luck,
Shirley

Talk to your AIX admin
If the package was installed with "smitty" and not yet committed it should be pretty easy.

Enjoy

You don't have to worry about unistalling the CSD. It is cumulative, and can be installed on top of ealier releases, i.e., CSD08 can be installed on CSD07, as all fixes in previous CSD release (CSD01 to CSD07) are included in CSD08.
Where there are bugs on earlier CSDs, they are fixed on later CSD.

Yes, you can have different machines with different CSD levels. You can even have different machines with different base code levels.

This is not true and that is the beauty of MQ

currently we have a unsupported version of mq (version 5.2).is it advisbale to go in for a csd upgrade.

It is advisable to do version upgrade. Go for WMQ 5.3.

also is it a fair assumption that if the base version runs on a particular version of OS then the CSDs can be applied without any issues.

You can apply the particular platform's CSD for the base. (what am I saying here )

is it advisbale to go in for applying the CSDs gradually to different machines or go in for a big bang approach.

depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to test for each machines after CSD then banging it big would be a problem. If you take the CSD words for it, go big bang, and hope no errors after it.
My feel is that, if you are not sure of the effect, then go slow. And test on each machine. But I'd rather go big, as being on the same level for all machines make more sense than having multiple version levels. Its either the CSD is accepted, or not accepted. In the end you still need to be on the supported version.

backup and test. and hope for the best.
