Hi,
Is it absolutely required to stop the channels before doing a file system backup (for a valid restore)? Are there any specific tools to backup MQ 5.3 running on Win2k?
Thanks |

There's an entire chapter in the System Administration guide on Backup and Recovery.
It's required to actually shut the queue manager down, in order to get a good backup. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

There is also a red book on backup recovery of qmgrs
You can run an online media backup and archive old logs without stopping the qmgr.
Read the docs and come back with specific questions. And yes to change to linear logging the easiest way is to ensure all queues are empty and delete / recreate the qmgr. You might want to take advantage of MS03 at that point. Check out MSOL or MS0L can't remember which...

The reason why I asked this question is because one of our clients never stop their channels nor their queue manager. So I was wondering how they can do proper backups... They also ping our channels every few minutes to see if we are up. This puts me in a position to find a way to avoid stopping the channels or the queue manager for backup purposes.
I have a decent idea of how to do backups in a normal situation but in this case and at this stage, all I can think of is to use MS-03 to make a backup copy of the objects.
Any other suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks |

Ah the myth of MQ 24/7 strikes again. You can NOT take a good backup of a running queue manager, it is not possible. By the time you record one part of the queue manager another part that you have already recorded may have changed. So I submit that whatever they told you, they are not taking a good backup. (They may think they have, but wait until they try to restore.) I would demand enough scheduled down time to back up the system. _________________ Patrick Goodhart

Since you have to stop your QM anyway, who cares what the other side is doing with their channels while you are backing up. _________________ Peter Potkay
