Hi,
- we are about to migrate from 5.2 to 5.3 on sun platforms client and server
- we would like to keep the objects and mqseries rights on these objects
kept in the /var/mqm filesystem and so doing avoiding to create these objects and mqs rights
question: is the following sequence correct?
1) delete old qmgr
2) uninstall 5.2
3) keep the contents of /var/mqm (coming from 5.2)
4) delete contents of /var/mqm/log
5) install 5.3
6) create qmgr and its logs
or do you recommend instead to clear /var/mqm and after installing 5.3 to recreate the objects and the rights mqs (via setmqaut commands) ?
thanks for help
Jakez

I suppose the following steps would do :
1)Shutdown the Qmgr
2)uninstall v5.2
3)install v5.3
4)Startup the qmgr.
MQ admins, pls correct me if I am wrong. |

complement to the question:
- because when creating the qmgr via crtmqm all the parameters concerning the qmgr logs files are optionnal:
can we keep the /var/mqm and /var/mqm/log coming from 5.2
and create only the new 5.3 qmgr which will work in this case with the old data in /var/mqm and the old qmgr logs files in /var/mqm/logs?
thanks for help

to upgrade MQ from 5.2 to 5.3 there is NO need to delete the Qmgr and recreate it!
I think this should answer your question. _________________ Michael

And if you have any doubts, as on any installation or upgrade, take a good file system backup of the server before begining. That way you can always return to your previous installation via recovery. (Besides, it gives your server admins practice doing backup and recovery.) _________________ Patrick Goodhart

Michael,
- thanks for the very interesting answer permiting to upgrade 5.2 to 5.3 without deleting and recreating the qmgr
- searching upgrading info in the forum i found this topic:
t=12827&highlight=ibm+3rd+lvl)
<
IBM 3rd lvl told us to do it this way in Solaris:
1. saveqmgr
2. shutdown mq
3. delete the qmgrs before uninstalling
4. uninstlal 5.1
5. install 5.3
6. install csd05
7. create qmgr with same name
8. import saveqmgr objects
Lvl 1 an 2 told us we could leave /var/mqm alone and the pkadd of 5.3 would automatically udate the existing MQManager but lvl 3 said this was not the case.
I am looking for that original e-mail.

- in this info IBM seams to say that we must delete the qmgr before upgrading 5.3 then recreate the qmgr after the upgrade is achieved
- what do you think about this?
- are you happy with the method you told me: NO need to delete qmgr and recreate it when upgrading 5.3 ?
thanks

Hi Patrick,
just a question about mqseries save/backup i think you are experienced about:
- i use to make the save of the mqseries filesysteme on unix host (/var/mqm, /var/mqm/logs, /opt/mqm) using the copy utility -cp)
- is that correct?
thanks for your feeling

saveqmgr and saveauth (or mq52auth ) are support pacs. Take a look at those. |

You are missing some of the key file system level resources, that in our case are in a usr directory.
I think the other thing you need to consider is the /home directories for any of your mq administrative user ids. (Just a pain really to have to recreate them.) Otherwise, this is in the backup and recovery redbook and in the adminstration guides, I'd look there to be certain.
You really should be doing this backup with the queue manager shut down.
We have a tendency to back up all of our filesystem around here, but we have all sorts of infrastructure to support that. (multiple robot tape drives, automatic schedulers, etc.) _________________ Patrick Goodhart

that's because a straight migration from 5.1 to 5.3 is not supported well.
with 5.2 to 5.3 I have not had any problems! _________________ Michael

The saveqmgr support pac has the saveauth(amqoamd) if I am not wrong. If you download the support pac saveqmgr, you can saveqmgr and saveauth as well. |

JAKEZ,
Check out ms0i (OAM authorities for v5.2). The saveqmgr/c utility can be found in ms03 |
