Hi all,
We are using VSE/ESA 2.5 and CICS 2.3 runing MQ for vse ver 2.1.1
Can anyone advise me how should we monitor the MQ for any error.
Beside using the MQMT transaction manualyl from the CICS session.
Anyone have any kind of procedure for this kind of monitoring.
Thank you in advance |

Define what you mean by error?
Do you mean a program abend? Your system should have methods for handling that and providing alerts.
Do you mean a program data error? You'll have to code that into your programs.
Do you mean channel issues? Queues being full or not being processed in a timely manner? You'll likely have to purchase software to do this - but it's possible you've got something that can already (or can be extended, by purchase, with something that can handle it).
Other types of MQSeries related errors - that aren't application issues, channel issues, or queue depth issues - are already reported to your system log.
In fact, channel events (starts, stops, failures) are usually reported in system logs, too. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Hi jefflowrey,
Thank you for your advise. Indeed we are looking at a way on how
to monitor the channel went down, message not being able to
send out due to channel error, etc.
The MQ syslog have all the errors but we need to manually
go through them. Any automatic way of doing.
By the way, in MQ for VSE how do other people ensure
that their MQ is alway up and running and all channel are
in active mode.
Thank you in advance |

Tan,
I might suggest you look up those third party monitoring tools, that does this stuff for you. There's BMC, Candle (oops Candle is now with IBM), etc.,
In the meantime, I thought MQ is always up and running unless something bad happen, or you manually stop it. If you are referring to cold restart, you might check with system startup script, to include startiing up MQ.
Where as for channels, I thought, it is normal for channels to go down when there is no activity after predetermine period. Otherwise, autostart can be achieve using channel trigger, or chinit. But then again, I am talking this in general, would it be different on VSE? |

Hi Kman,
Thank you for your advice.
The MQ in vse is somehow different from the other platform MQ.
As the MQ in vse is under CICS.
Thank you |

Yeah. The VSE version is more like the first MVS (not z/OS) version that used the CICS DataMover to provide the Channel support. (And boy, do I know all about that from a previous life. (Many years before Big Blue bought the Flickering Flame )).
I don't know of any products that support VSE, so I guess that you may be down to a home-brewed solution.
