Hi,

We need to setup a 3 node ACTIVE/ACTIVE/PASSIVE cluster using MSCS. All nodes are running on Win 2003 Server Enterprise.
Here are my details.

NODE1 - ACTIVE, WMQ5.3, QMA running
NODE2 - ACTIVE, WMQ5.3, QMB running
NODE3 - PASSIVE, WMQ5.3, (Failover for QMA and QMB)

I have picked up on the concepts based on Chapter 13 in System Administration Guide and following other posts here. But most of them dealt with two node clusters. I want to know if there is any documentation that deals with the setup of N+1 nodes (N active and 1 passive) with MSCS.

As far as my understanding, these are few setup changes that need to be done
1) Install WMQ v5.3 on all the three nodes.
2) Have 2 virtual IP addresses, one for node1 and node3 and another for node2 and node3 - ???
3) Have a shared disk between node1 and node3 (for sharing QMA logs and QMGR files). Another shared disk between node2 and node3 (for QMB stuff).
4) Quorum Disk ....?
4) Have two different cluster groups (in MSCS cluster administrator), one each for QMA and QMB.
5) Each cluster group (in MSCS Cluster Administrator) will contain corresponding resources
Virtual IP address, shared-disk, WebSphere MQ MSCS resource

Do correct me and Thx in advance.

What happens if Box 3 fails?

We decided to have a replica of the above setup at a DR site. If BOX3 fails then we would have to deal with a downtime of say 15 min to shift all the operation (configuring new set of channels, etc..) to the DR site.

Is there any other way out???

You could, I think (I don't know MSCS very well), set up a three-way share, such that any one box can host either or both queue managers on different IP addresses.

That way, if Box 3 goes down, Box 1 can fail over to Box 2. Or if Box 1 has already gone down, Box 2 can go down and ALSO fail over to Box 3.

Edit.
Maybe that already happens with Active-Active. But it didn't sound like it from your disk sharing setup.

Your description sounds about what you would need to do, although I personally was unaware of 3 node mscs availablity (I always thought it was 2,4 or 8 way).

Make sure the port the qma and qmb's listen on are different, as if both fail over, they will both run on node 3.

Just looking at an mscs setup, each resource has 'possible' owners, but the group has 'preferred' owners. I suspect if you set up the preferred owners to be node 1/3 and node 2/3 but possible owners being all nodes, you would achieve what was mentioned above (ie allow box 1 and 3 to fail but node 2 would take the whole load).
