Can anyone tell me where I can find a free version of make or nmake. I have downloaded the MQSeries Mod and created the makefile by running the Makefile.pl, but I can't find a version make to continue the install.

for what platform?
For Windows, there is a link in the ActiveState documentation to find nmake32 on the Microsoft site. Or you could just search the Microsoft site for nmake32.
But you also need a compiler as well as a make tool on Windows.
Most unix platforms should have a make tool, if they've got a compiler environment installed.

I had already found the nmake15 through the ftp site -
[url]ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/nmake15.exe[/url]
Still, it's good having someone out there looking out for us newbies.
I also found a dmake from cpan, in case anyone is interested -
[url]http://www.cpan.org/authors/id/GSAR/dmake-4.1pl1-win32.zip[/url]
