IBM uses MQ-Link for SAP ALE
You can as well use the SAP JCO to build your own in Java then just use MQ as a persistence layer for your IDOCs when you receive them.
We are using both of these approaches: MQ-Link receives and sends idocs to our mainframe and SAP JCO is our route of choice for our Java based applications (on Unix platform). The added advantage is that using the JCO and the additional IDoc classes we produce XML documents.
All major integrators have as well their own SAP adapter(IBM Crossworlds, Tivoli, etc...). Some are more invasive than others and require SAP transports...
