Let me start by saying I've read most of the Workflow documents regarding Performance/Capacity Planning and Production Rollout Considerations and have adhered to most recommendations such as:

# of Execution Servers based on processors
Ensuring adequate nightly Cleanup Server time to zero out done processes
Regular DB2 statistics and binding
Cleaning out FMC.SYSTEM_LOG and FMC.ERROR_LOG every other day
(I'm sure there are others that I can't remember)

What I haven't found is something about looking at Workflow performance and utilization once the environment is running. I have suspicions that Workflow is getting taxed, since sometimes I see Workflow being unresponsive or even having the fmcamain appear to "hang" when trying to login to fmcautil. We are running an AIX 3-tier environment with Workflow 3.4sp4, MQ 5.3, DB2 7.2, WAS 4. When I look in our 3-tier environment, none of the servers appear to be anywhere near capacity from a processor, memory, file system space and pagefile size standpoint. Of course, I'm looking at it from a server standpoint and not a Workflow-specific angle. I can't find anything in the fmcsys.log or fmcerr.log to indicate there is a problem either.

I'm wondering if there is anything else I might look at to determine what Workflow would be tied up with or what other aspects I might look at to determine if Workflow itself is taxed.

Thanks! Any help would be appreciated!

You didn't mention the version of AIX. But anyway, I'd make sure that every process started has exported EXTSHM=ON on the boxes where WAS and MQ5.2 are running. You might also check the MW error log and DB2 diaglog for some unusual events related to your 'hang' situation.

Volker,

Thanks for the reply. I am running AIX 5.1 on all machines. We have

Two WAS/MQ servers
Two Workflow/MQ Servers (both in same system group)
One DB2 Server

The db2diag.log shows no entries at the time of these problems.
The fmcerr.log shows nothing either. The fmcsys.log generally doesn't report anything but some deadlocks and once we got this when the fmamain did stop:

FMC31050E An error has occurred which has terminated processing.
FmcAssertionException, Condition=*** Invariant failed in /projects/fmc/drvp/lbld/v340/aix/src/fmckbin.inl(51): _pRep==0 || _pRep->_len <= _pRep->_allocLen

This is what I have in our DB2 server /home/db2inst1/.profile

EXTSHM=ON
export EXTSHM
db2set DB2ENVLIST=EXTSHM

We do NOT set this to ON on our WAS/MQ or Workflow/MQ boxes. I didn't read anything about that being needed for either of those applications. Where should that be set?
