Can some one let me know if we can restrict the number of processors MQ can utilize in a multiprocessor box. On need basis we want to allow MQ to utilize more processors. I heard we can do this with other applications.
Basically we want to reduce the number of CPU licenses initially and purchasing more if necessary.

Is setmqcap for this purpose?
what happens if we set lesser # of processors than acatually there in the box.

Thanks

The first time you start a queue manager on this machine, if you have not already run the setmqcap command, you get a warning saying Purchased license units not set (use setmqcap). If you have already run setmqcap but entered an incorrect value, you get the warning Insufficient license units. You need to run setmqcap to correct this before you can start a queue manager.

Use the setmqcap command to set your current purchased license units, by specifying the number of processors on which you are running WebSphere MQ.

It is just a warning.. and once capacity unit has been set, there is no more check on that.
Queue manager still runs with - or without this.

I would be interested to know how to set the limit.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at quick begginings manuals & admin guide but I haven't found any where about configuring MQ to use fewer processors. I would be more interested in knowing if we can can configure MQ to use only 2 processors in a 4 processor box and upgrade it to a 4 processor license on need basis.

if I use 'setmqcap 2', does MQ uses only 2 processors in a 4 processor box? I doubt it works that way. Can some one let me know if its possible with MQ?
Thanks

I'm rather sure that setmqcap has only to do with licensing, not actual processor useage.

I believe (without being sure) that the way you control the number of processors that MQSeries can make use of is OS dependant, and not managed by an IBM tool.

There is no way to tell MQ to use only 1 or 2 processors out of the x
Also Licences for MQ are based on processors in the machine, not processors used.
Unless you use for example AIX LPAR's and only install MQ in one LPAR. So I suggest you talk this over with your IBM rep to be sure as I don't know all the legal details and wouldn't want you to get in 'trouble'...
