Hi! I am in my fourth year of electrical engineering and I am studying lossless compression routines for my thesis. I have downloaded the compression algorithms by Mark Nelson and they are very well written but i have one problem: I was wondering if the output file (from compression) is written in ascii format. I know that there is a bit i/o file, but the characters that come out look a little unregular. Please help! It would really help in my research endevors!

Hi,
Boy, were you digging around on my web site. 
I have tested those compression routines on Windows, Unix and the mainframe. The output is not, per say, ASCII.
On Windows & Unix the input may be ASCII data but the output is a binary representation of the compressed input. Like wise, if you compression an executable file from Windows or Unix (this is not ASCII data) then you get a binary representation of the compressed input.
Similarly, on the mainframe, the input may be EBCDIC data but the output is a binary representation of the compressed input. Like wise, if you compression an executable file from the mainframe (this is not EBCDIC data) then you get a binary representation of the compressed input.
I am not a compression theorist. I would strongly suggest that you read some of Mark's papers at:
