I would like to request your input. My company is considering Centralized MQSeries Administration. I would like to get an idea from existing LARGE MQSeries installations on how many MQ Administrators you have to perform the work – MQM Setup, MQ Admin, Monitoring Configuration, Monitoring, Administration of add-on MQ products like MQSI. No need to provide company names or confidential information. I am trying to get an idea on how many individuals our site might require. So for example if your site had:

10 MVS MQM’s
20 Win MQM’s
10 AIX MQM’s
Admin - WebSphere MQ, WebSphere MQ Workflow, WebSphere Business Integration Event Broker, Candle CCC

We have 5 MQ Admins

Thanks for your Posts!

2 MQAdmins, would be the minumum.
With proper tooling they can cover a lot of 'ground'...

The real question is: "What do you expect from an MQAdmin?".

If you expect someone who will be purely an MQSeries systems administrator, then yes with a proper tool you can get away with 2 or three.

If you expect someone who will not only manage your MQSeries infrastructure, but will also manage the systems that MQSeries runs on, and also provide development support, and and and....

Then you will need more.

Well for us the 2 admins are fine we do more than just MQSeries aministration. We are involved in many other things MQSI/Assisting Developers/Developing. In fact the actual MQSeries Admin. piece is the least amount of work. We have extremely few MQSeries Issues, if our only jobs were MQSeries we would be the maytag repair guys.

I sure appreciate everyone’s replies! This data may help some justification for some warm bodies.

Just so you see my dilemma, below are my numbers (some yet to be determined). If you throw in MQSI and the other add-ons for the base product, then even more bodies maybe. Not to mention the Distributed side is PATROL monitored and the MVS side Candle – that’s another can of worms.

60 MVS MQM’s
6 Linux(zSeries)
150+ of Unix Flavor MQM’s (still counting)
Windows ? (Sacred to think)
Some Tandem I have heard of
Some ?
