What are the options for putting a message to a mainframe queue that originates on a java based intranet app? Is a direct connection to the queue possible, or is a remote queue/transmission queue required? If direct connection is possible, is there a limit to the number of connections allowed? Thanks.

You have 2 options:

1) Use the Java Client (freely downloadable as a support pac)

2) Install a queue manager on the platform where your Java application is running.

With option 1 the connection is synchronous and so there is no need for a remote queue or transmission queue, but you still need a server connection channel defined on the mainframe.

With option 2 the connection is a full asynchronous MQ one, and so you need to defined a remote queue and transmission queue on your Java platform along with a sender channel. You would also need a corresponding receiver channel at the mainframe end.

Keep in mind that option 1 requires you to have the MQSeries CAF (client attachment feature) installed on the mainframe. This feature is subject to license fees and not automagically installed with the base queue manager.
Just a thought,
Stefan
