I am trying to upgrade to 5.3 on a Windows 2000 server, and cannot because I cannot get rid of the old version.
If I go to Control Panel...Add/Remove Programs and select MQSeries, the uninstall procedure begins, but then an error box gets thrown up saying it cannot find the MQSeries.msi file.
So I instead went straight to the 5.3 Install procedure, which threw me into Upgrade mode. I clicked install, and it started to work, but again, the error came up saying it could not find MQSeries.msi, and the installation ended on me.
I cannot find MQSeries.msi anywhere on this server.
I tried to uninstall MA88 from Add/ Remove programs, and got the error saying it could not find the " IBM MQSeries classes for Java and Java Message Service.msi" file. And then the uninstall ended on me. I cannot find this .msi file anywhere either.
I copied over the entire MA88 Install directory to a temp folder on this machine, found the IBM MQSeries classes for Java and Java Message Service.msi file, and then tried the MA88 uninstall again. This time when the error came up saying it could not find the file, I manually pointed it to the temp folder, and it worked. MA88 is uninstalled on this server.
So I tried the same trick for base MQ. I copied over the entire Install CD for 5.2.1, and located the MQSeries.msi file. I tried uninstalling from Add/ Remove programs again, and then manually pointed the uninstall procedure to the temp folder. No luck. The uninstall ends with a Fatal Error. I tried upgrading to 5.3. Fatal error encountered during the upgrade, presumably where 5.2.1 is trying to be uninstalled.
I cannot get rid of 5.2.1 on this server! I tried removing CSD05, and that worked, but still the same problem with base 5.2.1. Thankfully, I can get MQ 5.2.1 running again, so the customer is OK, but I can't upgrade this guy.
We suspect this is related to an automated failed SP3 install for WIN2000 earlier in the week. It screwed up the ability to open MQExplorer or MQServices from the start menu. We thought that is all it did. Looks like it botched up some other stuff. Below is a quote from the Sys Admin for the server explaining THAT problem. Maybe it is related???

I'd like to update you to the issues that have risen on the concentrators since we began rolling out the MS security patch and W2K service pack 3. As you are aware we rolled both SP3 and MS03-026 to the CMS DEV and CTST concentrators on 8/5 and 8/7 respectively without any issues, the same was true for MQIDEV01 and MQIDEV02. We use a tool called Update Expert to do the scheduling of this type of maintenance, it was used for the initial machines as well as machines patched since Monday night.
Now to the issues. Since Monday night the W2K service pack installs have failed through Update Expert while the patch on the other hand hasn't, this has lead to some shortcuts which are fired off upon logon to become corrupted. An indication of this problem would be a pop up message indicating that the path to install the product can't be found. The product(s) are in fact running, MQ Series and NAV are not affected .

Have you tried putting the MQ 5.2.1 series CD in the drive and removing it that way. The CD will give you the option to remove it if MQ is already installed.

Yeah, I tried that. It does NOT give me the Uninstall option. But if I go ahead and try to install 5.2.1 again, it does recognize the fact that there is MQ already installed there, and thus goes into upgrade mode! (upgrade from 5.2.1 to 5.2.1?!?!)
I click ok to go ahead. Hopefully this reinstall of 5.2.1 on top of the old 5.2.1 will fix the Add/Remove problem. Nope. The reinstall starts rolling back and quits half way thru. _________________ Peter Potkay

Hmm..that is a tricky.
Well two other things that come to mind you could try is:
1)From Windows CMD prompt type:
X:\setup /L*v! Y:\mqout.log
where X = CD Rom drive of MQ Series 5.2.1 CD & Y= local drive (usually C:\) where you want the output to go. What this will do is put the install information out to a file.
Shown below is a sample of mine that failed during a 5.3 upgrade:
06:48:19
06:48:19 Invoking: 'E:\MQLaunch.exe'
06:48:19 Current dir: 'E:'
06:48:19 Parameters: '/l*v! d:\mq53.log'
06:48:38 MQLaunch.exe ended; exit code 229 (0x000000e5)
06:48:38 Ending with RC 229 (0x000000e5)
06:48:38
I never found out was RC 229 was...I imagine someone from IBM support would know...
The 2nd thing I can think of is a manual delete???
2) From Windows CMD prompt
CD to X:\Program Files\IBM\MQSeries\bin
{X=install directory of MQSeries}
X:\Program Files\IBM\MQSeries\bin\>amguregn amquregn.ctl> outfile.txt
-This will dump the registry values of MQ to a file.-
I guess you could delete all those Hives & Keys and then the MQSeries directory and start fresh. |

I got it to work using the following steps that my Win2000 Sys Admin provided.
Don't know if this is the best way or not , but hey, right now the server is at 5.3 CSD4 and performing nicely .

If the add/remove feature fails to remove the product then copy the 5.2.1 install files from the MQ Installation CDROM to the local machine
Attempt to reinstall 5.2.1 using the update path
If the install rolls back then the 1st thing to do is to rename the bin directory under \programs\mqseries and attempt the installation again, the update process will recreate this directory for you.
If the second attempt fails then MSI logging will need to be enabled to determine where the process is falling down. In the case of the I901 machine the amqpcert.lic file was the culprit, it was failing with access denied when an attempt was made to copy it from the install file directory into the bin directory . If logging is enabled it should be disabled (registry key removed) once the problem has been corrected.
If in fact the installation goes clean followed by the upgrade then please remove the installation files from the location you copied them to in step 1.
