How to find the length of a message

I need to store the length of the incoming XML message into a database. In the dtabase node I have
DECLARE AA INTEGER;
SET AA=LENGTH(Root);

INSERT INTO Database.MSG_LENGTH(M_LENGTH)VALUES(AA);

However the column M_LENGTH is NULL.
MQSI trace shows that LENGTH(Root) is evaluated to NULL.

If I change
SET AA=LENGTH(Body);
the column M_LENGTH is zero.
MQSI trace shows that LENGTH(Body) is evaluated to 0.

What did I do wrong ?

You must coompute the length of the bitstream of message, e.g.
SET L=LENGTH(BITSTREAM(InputBody));
