But, what I have always found is that a screen size of 1024 x 768 is pretty much industry standard, and 99% of web pages are designed with this in mind, unless there are definite physical reasons to map things to a larger screen size. Many screens are still 17" here and I have found that for most people, as density higher than 1024 x 768 is only practical on screens that are bigger than 17".

I think you'll find 1280x1024 much more a minimum for most graphics cards, and it works great even on a 17" monitor.

As jefflowrey points out, HTML has no concept of screen size.

HTML might not have a concept of screen size, but it has a concept of component width.
And if you have too many fixed width components across one line of the screen, that are not allowed to wrap, then you get problems 
IMO web pages should be tested and designed to render correctly with variable width, but should layout correctly at 1024x768, because there are still loads of machines out there with that as their max resolution and a large number of laptops still ship with that as their max rez. |
