Software has a lifecycle - from GA to EoS. This is especially true of server software. We know this.
We have done a poor job of educating IT management on the merits of being current, but not too current; and replacing (upgrading) software as older versions fall out of service.
Software upgrades should be part of a policy statement that ensure for the entire organization that information systems are ready to meet the needs and challenges with a minimum of impact.
My organization, a public utility, had similar maintenance and replacement policies about vehicles and equipment. Nobody ever said 'why are we replacing a car, truck, skip-loader, generator, transformer?' These items had drop-dead dates/mileages, after which they were summarily replaced.
The challenge my IT management team faced was convincing the executives that computer hardware and software should be managed in a similar manner. It took a while. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.
