Which is why I try to educate developers into abstracting themselves from the transport - them doing stuff at channel level is akin to giving a train driver directions!

I always try the postal service one.

I wouldn't phone the recipient of my letter to see if they were at home before posting my letter. Nor would I expect my postman to be waiting to take it there immediately.

I like using email as an anology. Your Inbox is the queue and emails are the messages.

"If you sent your buddy an email and he didn't reply, do you call the Email System Admin and ask them once wrong with the Email system? Or do you call your buddy? So when you send an MQ request message and don't get a reply, the first person to call is the developer supporting the replying application, not me!"

Yes, that is the main reason to NOT TO USE "fire and forget"
and try to use "Request/Response"
so we skip the network as the "main" operator ...

mr gbaddeley - I never had an idea of how often do messages flow thry my channels ... I have no way to calculate the figure you are saying.

Do a periodic channel status command (say every hour or so) and look at the message counts and last time a message was sent. That will give you an idea of the daily pattern of usage.
