Hi,
My team has several MQ/WMQI/MQWF environments to maintain, and up until now we have given each environment its own Windows machine to house the Configuration Manager.
But we're starting to run out of Windows machines and starting to wonder if we can have 1 machine deploy to multiple brokers (on HP). These environments will usually not have the same version/build of our in-house code deployed to them--does this matter?
About a year ago, for one of our Control Centers, we defined a second broker and tried to deploy to it, but the Control Center seemed to be confused as to which broker we were trying to deploy. So we gave up on this approach, but now it's getting costly to have 1 Windows box per environment, especially since we are soon doubling the number of environments!
If someone could answer this question for us once and for all, I would GREATLY appreciate it! Thanks! |

You did not mention what version of WMQI are you using. I am assuming that you are talking about WMQI 2.1 (you have references to Control Center in your post).

Yes it does. In WMQI 2.1 your source code is stored into Config Mgr DB and message defn is stored into MRM DB. IF you have more than one Broker using this config mgr then they will share congig & MRM repository.
You can allocate one Broker to each group, but that will not solve your problem. They will still be able to see (and modify) each other's source code. Also, you can run into deploy issues, etc.
Are you planning on using different versions of the same code on these brokers? Or are you planning on using these brokers for different projects?
So, if you see there are few advantages and disadvantages of sharing the same config mgr with different brokers. You can look at each one of these and see which approach works best for you.
Version 5.0 will solve your problem as the source code is stored locally (developer's file system), so you can share the same config mgr with many brokers. Also, you can enforce security at Execution Group level.
I hope this helps. _________________ Kiran

Kirani, thanks for your post! You are right, we are using MQSI 2.1 CSD04 (ConfigMgr & Control Center only) and MQSI 2.1.07 on HP-UX 11 (brokers).
These Control Centers/Brokers are all for the same application, so they are using almost identifical code, but of different versions/builds. But still, of course, we don't want to mix up code and/or messages between the environments.
So it seems we will continue our practice of allocating a Windows machine for each environment. I am not a Developer, but I will suggest to them that they evaluate WMQI 5 and consider switching to it. (Job security for me!) :) |

Also, you can use softwars like VMWare to partition your Windows machine into two or more Windows Servers! _________________ Kiran
