Hi all
having to stop the QM for backup on a daily basis causes a problem in our shop as we do not have any means of clustering/backup QM or similar to cover the downtime. Since we use mainly files (over IIB) we do not need to recover any messages but can just "replay" he files in case of a restart. apart from a few exceptions the connected systems can handle duplicate messages/files.
So assuming I make a backup ONLY when doing any changes to the QM (we have a fairly stable system with little changes) would that be enough to rebuild the system in case of a failure or am I missing something?
Cheers Jan
Environment: WMQ v8, IIB v9 all on Windows |

What you're likely missing is changing your backup strategy when your shop starts using MQ messages and/or web services in 2 - 5 years...!
But if you have the kind of system you describe then a daily backup of the queue manager is probably overkill. I'd consider a scheduled weekly / monthly backup as no-one will remember to manually take a backup when a change is made, especially if it's as infrequent as you say. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Or, as you're using V8.0, in your script that pipes in the input file ensure there is a final line that does a dump of all the objects/authorities to an external file - assuming that it's only the objects and authorities you're interested in. _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

You should also have the qm.ini under source control.
Object and authorities + qm.ini will allow you to rebuild a qmgr from scratch pretty fast.
If you need messages... than you have to make them persistent and do an offline backup. _________________ MQ & Broker admin |
