| I wanted to get any pointers on the use of symbolic links for pieces of the MQ filesystem. We are very performance conscience and wanted to see if there are any best practice documents out there in regards to how to best use the filesystem. I run into space issues from time to time and used symbolic links in the past locally and curious if remote storage would be feasible. |

Below WMQv7.1 - WMQ can only be installed in the default location. If it's not, it breaks. Install it where it wants to go & put symlinks in the path if needed
At WMQv7.1 or higher - WMQ can be installed into a location selected at install time.

Disc is cheap. Buy more.

It's feasible, or at least doable. Poorly perfoming (or not wonderfully performing) storage will reduce your queue manager's throughput to a slow crawl. Remote storage which at any point becomes inaccessable (even briefly) will stop your queue manager like it's been shot in the head & manual recovery may be necessary depending on how consistent things are.

MQ installation location can be the same as other products (in /opt, or /usr on AIX) without any performance or capacity issues. /opt/mqm (/usr/mqm on AIX) directory can be set up as a separate file system, 500 MB min - 1 GB typical.
MQ data is in /var/mqm. This should always be a separate file system to /var. Size should be 500 MB min to no upper limit.
The MQ recovery logs should be another separate file system, /var/mqm/log, ideally on a separate disk assembly to /var/mqm. Sizing is to your own requirements for Linear or Circular logs.
/var/mqm/errors can also benefit from being on its own file system, so that mega size FDC files do not use up all the qmgrs queue file space in /var/mqm.

The MQ product does not take up much space. Once loaded - most of the MQ programs are memory resident.
For performance you need to consider the queues and logs (and associated settings). There are various articles on how to optimise these. |
