Hi guys, I'm not an MQ guy I'm actually an AIX guy however MQ is running on my servers.
The current environment is MQ running on AIX with powerHA.
However we want to move this customer to the new power7 environment and we will not be doing powerHA in this environment.
The IBM consultant has told this customer that without powerHA they do not have redundancy if a queue manager goes down.
So in other words, you have server A and server B.
Server A goes down and powerHA fails everything over to serverB
The queue that was on server A becomes active on serverB.
MY question to you guys is that can MQ not be made smart enough so that if a queue dies the messages know to go to the other queue? It seems to me that MQ would be smart enough to have this option.
If so, could someone direct me to documentation that backs this up as well? I need fire for my argument.
Many thanks in advance. |

If you have a queue manager on serverA, then none of it's queues exist on serverB unless you have EITHER some kind of HA setup OR you use a Multi-Instance queue manager.
And, there is no such thing as a "queue" dying. Either the qmgr is running or it's not.
If there is NO queue manager on server B, then there is no place for any messages to go.
If there IS a queue manager on server B, then EITHER it is "the same" queue manager (under powerHA or MI) or it is a DIFFERENT queue manager.
If it is a DIFFERENT queue manager, then an MQ cluster will provide automatic routing of messages.
But it won't serve for HA requirements, just load balancing.
Have you considered that your IBM consultant is actually being paid real money to actually know what they are talking about?
You do not seem to have the necessary base MQ skills to make an argument here. |

I haven't considered that he knows what he's talking about because when he approached me for building out the powerHA environment he was clueless as to how it worked, and how to build it, even though he said he knew.
Maybe he is smarter as far as MQ goes, but I don't know because as I noted, I'm not an MQ guy. I stated that up front.
So I guess this is my question to you.....
I give you two lpars. lpar1 and lpar2 and you don't have powerHA. How do we design the MQ environment so that if the qmgr does die, messages get routed to the qmgr on lpar2?
So I get the load balancing part. My question is really about if the qmgr dies, and the best way to deal with that if powerHA is not involved. |
