Hi Friends,

I am soon going to face an interview on Message Broker.
I started working on WMB like 6 months back in my present organization. Before that I used to work in Java/J2EE/SOA etc.
So, can you help me out here? No, not with sample questions or so, but more on expectations.
What I mean to say is that, as I faced various Java related interviews before, I understand what the interviewer might expect (at least and good to have).
However, as I never faced WMB interview before, I don't know what would be his/her expectations. Like, am I supposed to know every bit of each node I've used(each properties etc.) or is it more important to know what to use in which situation?

To give you all a background, in my current organization(and current project also) we use WMB to bridge the gap between applications that used to call old web services and new web services that are going to replace them. So for these, we work with SOAP related nodes, transformation nodes etc. We also work with feeds which we read from MQ and put to database.
We don't work on adapters like SAP/Siebel etc. So, I don't know how they work.

And as some of my friends here have already answered some of my queries in other posts, you all know my knowledge level. not great.

So, please give me some tips.

Many thanks in advance.

I am sorry to say that I can't help you out, but am happy to say that it is refreshing to see a genuine request for help rather than a "...give me dump of questions..." approach, and I wish you well in the interview.

Good luck in the interview.

Although I have not been to many interviews nor have I conducted any, I suggest that you find out as much about the organisation as you can in advance - and do all the usual prep for a competency-based interview rather than worrying unduly about the technical questions.

If it is a large organisation you might be able to find out about their broker implementation in advance - but even then, swotting up on particular technical information would be very hit & miss. Look for any clues to potential focus ares from the job advert, and just be confident generally in your own ability . If there is an area you are not so sure of - maybe you have never used v7 - then be aware of what is available/possible. The IBM education assistant tends to be good for background, without getting bogged down in details: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/ieduasst/v1r1m0/index.jsp

You should also be prepared for the possibility - albeit small - that the people you are interviewing with may have actually seen this post.

competency-based interview

Being able to
- explain the product capabilities
- give examples of alternative ways to solve a problem using the product
- demonstrate familiarity with product resources - like documentation
- give examples of how you have used the product to solve a business problem
- explain how the product can be integrated with other products
- explain how you would go about problem-determination with the product

think about for which role this intrview is ..
As I undestand your experaince in WMB is just 6 months, the expectation will not be very high from you at this level...

Be prepared for what you have done till now with no ambiguity in your answers.

Best of Luck !!!

I have conducted a number of WMB technical interviews over the phone.

My advice would be to answer the question asked (or say that you don't know the answer) and not to make a long speech about stuff in general unrelated to the question. Keep answers reasonably concise.

Also, when you are called up for the interview, answer with your name, not just "hello". I must have called about 10 candidates (at the appointed time) and not one of them answered with their name.

Find a quiet place for the telephone call, rather than a street corner!

Actually, what I meant by competency-based interview was preparation for behavioural type questions: http://www.interview-skills.co.uk/competency-based-interviews.aspx

My point was that you can prepare for that sort of question, but you can only answer the vast range of technical questions with honest answers depending on your experience. Don't be afraid to say "I have never used that functionality - but I know where I would start looking for information."

This sounds like your first interview is with HR to see if you are a good fit personality-wise. I'm guessing that if you pass this interview, your next one will be with IT folks.

A good interviewer will mix and match touchy-feely questions with technical ones, to get a sense of both your tech skills (and potential to learn and grow) and inter-personal skills.

The URL you posted itemizes non-technical, behavioral (behavioural) skills.

As AN interviewer of someone with 6 months of a skill set, I'd more interested in whether you can work with others as a team, are interested in learning more, and taking on more responsibility.

Be prepare for the "what do you see yourself doing in five years" question. It is an opening for you to talk about yourself, your goals and ambitions, - your style.

Let me add a bit more:

In any interview, I want to know what qualities (in addition to the technical ones) the potential candidate brings to the organization.

Do you understand business generally? Do you know specifically about the business to which you are applying?

In other words, what preparation have you done for the interview? If nothing (other than dressing nicely), then you demonstrate little real interest.

Do you know something about accounting? Profit and loss? Most businesses focus on these, and expect IT to participate in achieving business goals and objectives. Technical goals are set to achieve business goals. WMB is one tool in the IT tool kit.

Hi Friends,
I must thank you all for such informative input. Its really more than I expected.

@bruce2359 I understand your point on business understanding, and yes, I felt the same in previous interview I faced(when I knew Java/J2EE alone).

@vmcgloin I understand now what you mean. Yes, I am preparing for these also.

Once again, thanks a lot guys.
