Hi All,
I am going to do the MQ Administration so I need some quick tips, hope you don't mind my silly questions..

This is regarding the back up of the QManagers..
I already have gone through the chapter in sys Admin guide.
My question is,
If I wanted to take a back up of the QManager, I should first run the rcdmqimg, stop the QManager and then take the back up of /var/mqm/qmanagers/myqm and var/mqm/log/myqm. Then start the queueManager. Am I right??
If my environment is 24x7, How can I stop the QueueManager every time I wanted to take the back up, as I understand this is a task that I need to do on a scheduled basis..

Could somebody answer my long but silly question..

thanks
keka

First of all - you want to use linear logging, rigth?

There's been an extensive discussion on linear logging and backup:

http://www.mqseries.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6396&highlight=

The conclusion is that if you do not take backups (and to do this you must stop the queue manager), you need:
1. The initial backup of queue manager files and logs
2. All log files that have been created since you started using the queue manager in question

Thus, you can end up having to store quite a load of data. Isn't there any possibility to have a scheduled time for queue manager backup (e.g. when there are hardly any messages to process)?

That link information was the best detail I got on the recovery and back up. Thanks for sharing it with me.
You are right, If I don't take back-up on a scheduled intervals, I will have to keep a ton of information which I don't think is a good Idea either..
I will figure out some window times on the week end nights and take a back up.

Thanks a lot for all the information and suggestions I really appreciate it.

First how are you using MQSeries. If you are using MQSeries for
all non-persistent messages then you really dont need to back up the log files.

You can get the Queue Manager Definitions Support pac and just back up your definitions.

1) Create a script to recreate queue manager .
2) Create a script with your authorities (setmqaut)
3) Backup definitions as required. This does not require MQSeries to be stopped

When it comes to having to recover

1) delete the old queue manager
2) run create script
3) run setmqaut script
4) runmqsc QMGR_NAME < backup of definitions

This is much simpler, but is only good if you dont have any messages you cant recreate.
