Through MQ Admin I can see messages on a queue but when I try to look at them they're not there. One theory I have on this, is that the unit of work they belong too has not yet been commited, is this correct, does anyone have any thoughts on this?

You are right. The messages might not have been committed yet.
Depending upon the platform and the transaction co-ordinatior you are using, you MUST have either Ipprocs/Opprocs greater than 0. Which would mean that there are some applications that are still connected to this queue and they are the ones that probably are doing a put/get under syncpoint.
If you are using MQ as your transaction manager, you MUST have ip/opprocs greater than one.
Another theory could be that the messages are expired. Unless you see the count(curdepth) to be the same even after you tried to get/browse the messages more than once.
Cheers.
