I have a working cluster with a mixture of IA-64 unix machines and Windows servers. We were considering including z/OS machines in the cluster as well.
I'm just curious if there are any gotchas specific to clustering with mainframes? I know the z/OS object creation sometimes has more detail due to space allocation (cylinders, etc.).
Anything else?

z/OS always has more detail as the z/OS concepts of page sets and storage classes don't exist on distributed platforms.
Aside from that, there's nothing about clustering on z/OS that differs from other platforms. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Remember that with a cross platform cluster you have sometimes firewalls and NAT stuff between qmgrs in the cluster. This is where it behooves you to use the dns names and make sure they match and resolve to the right IP address on both sides of the NAT and firewall... You can then use the dns name in the cluster receiver without problem.
And remember that the right IP address does not have to be the SAME IP address, but it has to route to the same box/target.
Have fun _________________ MQ & Broker admin |

If using any exits on the CLUSRCVR channels you must create a channel autodef exit to write the exit name back to the partner CLUSSDR in the correct format for the platform. |

The simple answer: Yes. A z/OS qmgr can be part of a cluster in the same way a midrange qmgr can, namely: define the required objects as being part of the cluster. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

sometimes there are related cluster PTFs across the plattforms but thats very rare...... however, i recommend to read the cluster fix descriptions when applying fix paks or PTFs _________________ Regards, Butcher |

Space allocation (for pagesets to hold queues) has nothing to do with creating objects. Unlike midrange (UNIX, Win), in z/OS, disk space is allocated before it is used - not as it is used. So, yes, this is a difference. But your z/OS systems programmer(s) know this, and know how to do this.
WMQ admin is nearly identical on all platforms - DEF QL has a few z/OS-specific object attributes - STGCLASS, for example, identifies which pageset (on disk) a queue will placed. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.
