I am new to MQ clustering concepts.
Setup :
I have 2 queue managers QMgr1 (box1) and QMgr2 (box2). Both are part of cluster(full repos each) and have same replica of queues on each one of them. I have applications running on box1 connecting to Qmgr1 and applications running on box2 connecting to Qmgr2.
I have below questions
1) When Qmg1 goes down on box1, applications connecting to Qmgr1 will not function?. Does clustering has any advantage from HighAvail perspective here ?
2)Apps on box1 connectes to QMgr1 and puts/gets messages from Q's. Does cluster do load balancing at this point of time by put/gets from same Q's that are on Qmgr2-box2 ?
Is clustering in MQ only for loadbalancing and not high avail on qmanagers ? |

Yes. When the qmgr goes down, the connection will be lost between the app and MQ. MQ cluster wont help when the connecting QMgr goes down.

If you configure the queues on QMgr1 & QMgr2 in cluster, then YES..the msgs will load balance between the same queues defined on QMgr1 & QMgr2.

MQ clustering will be used for load balancing and failover. For HA, you need to go with hardware clustering like HACMP/ Veritas etc. |

... with this failover qualification: messages that exist in queues on the failed qmgr will be stranded there until the qmgr once again comes to life.
HA is different from failover. MQ clustering is different from hardware clustering. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

More accurately, it will do so if the CLWLUSEQ attributes are set correctly... _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

Terms like high-availability, clustering and load-balancing, have a variety of meanings - some of which overlap or are confused with other vendor definitions.
From an application perspective, having multiple instances of the same queue (and the same consuming application) provides for (limited) application high-availability (of the consuming application). This will likely not satisfy a requirement for a never-ending qmgr image (as z/OS does in Parallel Sysplex).
WMQ Clusters allow for load-balancing, whether or not high-availability is a requirement. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.
