Is it possible to run a queue manager on AIX using a different ID, other than mqm ? Are there any special considerations for this ?
Our AIX administrators don't like the fact that Queue Managers on different LPARs are run with the same ID ( mqm ). They would like for the ID to be different from one LPAR to the next.

They are different IDs, they just happens to have the same friendly name. Maybe if you gave them different UIDs they would feel better?

But no, I think the mqm ID is a hard requirment for MQ.

To Start/stop MQ and to perform any chages you need to have an mqm id .

cheers,

Is AIX different from the other platforms? On other platforms, the user ID just needs mqm authority, but is not required to be 'mqm'.

Whether it is a good idea is a different matter. On unix, if you create MQ objects using a user who is a member of mqm as well as other groups, all those other groups will have full authority to the object.

Here's something we recently noticed. We inadvertently started a queue manager as 'wmqi' on Solaris. When we 'ps', we see that the MQ processes are running as 'mqm'. But when an MQ trigger fires a process, the executable runs as 'wmqi'.

If I were going to run MQ with a different ID, I would ask that it be a service ID (not a real person), and I would guard it as carefully as I guard 'mqm'.

There is no way (that I know of) to install the product without an 'mqm' ID. And even if you start and stop MQ with the different ID, it will look like 'mqm' to the OS.

I wonder if your AIX admins would be satisfied with local 'mqm' IDs, each with a different password.

Editorial opinion: Your AIX admins need more to do.

Wrong. You need to be in the mqm group.
