Hi All,

I would like to know if its ok to create cluster objects on FR(full repository) QMs.

I understand from some IBM docs that we usually create clustered objects on PR(partial repos) QMs.

The only intention of have FR QM is hold a directory of all clustered objects in a cluster.

So the questions is , Is it a best practice to have clustered objects defined on FR QM?.

Thanks all and poobah.

I'm not aware of any IBM recommendations on this (and would be interested to be pointed in their direction).

Speaking strictly personally, I don't see there's a reason why an FR shoudn't host clustered objects. A lot depends on server availablity, server size, network availability and so forth. Consider the following:

- You want to have 3 instances of an application running for load balancing reasons. You only have 3 servers available to use. 2 of these will be FRs...!

- You want to have 3 instances of an application running for load balancing reasons. You have 3 new machines and access to the existing estate of queue managers & a mainframe. All your servers will be PRs

- The server you intend to use for an FR is a modestly sized Unix box. The application running on it is computationally intensive and stores a ton of temporary data to disk as it works. You should consider moving application or FR

- The server you intend to use as an FR is a Unix box the size of a house, with "Love" written on one CPU, "Hate" written on another and enough memory to store the entire British Library digitised. It also hosts 200 applications and a database. You should consider moving the FR....!

My 2 cents, other scenarios apply, other considerations are equally relevant.

Strictly (and very pedantically) speaking, until you do, they wont be FR's; CLUSSDR's and CLUSRCVR's are cluster objects too.

See above, but as you are no doubt speaking contextually about queues, which IBM docs please? I'd like to have a look myself.

Says who? An FR is just another queue manager within the cluster as fa as I am concerned, just one that happens to have additional functions within that cluster.

Any queue manager should be able to handle the load you are going to throw at it, plus some wiggle room for capacity increases, and if you are solutioning the infrastructure to be clustered, you build in the head room for that too; best practice states that you host FR's on the most robust, and highly available queue managers (z/OS anyone?), not (as far as I am aware) that you have dedicated queue managers for the purpose (CAVEAT: monster clusters excepted perhaps).

I managed to get this on pdf on MQ clusterting notes..

It talks about client queue managers and server queue managers..and FRs

the client and server queue managers will be PR, and on which you will create clustered objects . But no definitions on FRs.

What I mean to say is that , if we are design a clustered architecture..this is how you would go about it.

But yes certainly you can create clustered objects on FRs, if we don't expect too much load on the FR box.

By clustered objects , I mean ONLY clustered queues...
Sorry for not being specific about it..

The pdfs are from IMPACT 2008 ..
there was some session on advanced MQ clustering..
If i get them on IBM site i will forward the link poobah..
or if i can upload files here..let me know how .

PM the admin, who will advise you on method & confirm a lack of copyright issues.

In his dreams....

Scroll to the top of the page. Next to the little house icon, is a little envelope icon - guess what it does.
