Hello,
as I said in a previous topic, i'm working on a big project to migrate 50 servers AIX with MQSeries 5.3 to Solaris 10 and MQSeries 6 or perhaps 7.
My question is : it is impossible to install MQSeries 50 times on all servers, so it is possible to install one MQSeries V6 on a server in a Solaris zone and copy that zone on all others servers Solaris.
In a second time we can change the parameters for all servers to adapt them at each Queue Manager.
So could you help me for that question.
Thanks a lot .

No it's not. It's just time consuming and possibly a job for a scripted solution.

Look here, here and here for information about working with zones.
It sounds to me like you're looking to do one install in a Root zone and get the sparse zones to inherit the software. I don't know if all 50 "servers" share a Root zone in your configuration, but it ought to take the number of installs down to a manageable number.

Erm....AFAIK each sparse zone has it's own kernel parameters and so forth, though I'm a bit unclear on a) how that works or b) what you're want to change for a WMQ install that varies from server to server.
Speak to your Solaris guy for the first point and repost the second! _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Read the WMQ for Solaris Quick Beginnings: Silent installation. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

Hello,
thanks for your answer.
I have studied all Solaris and MQSeries installation on global zone or non-global zone, and i'm a little disapointed because if i have undertanded all i must install MQseries in a global zone (system zone).
So i cannot automaticly copy it from one server to others.
I cannot ask my Solaris guys, because they don't have any aknowledge about MQSeries.
My idea was to mae a Snapshot or a dump of a non-global zone (with the install of MQSeries) and putting it on a same non-global zone on another server.
What do you think about, i have read that we can do that for the boot global zone, why not for a non-global zone.
do you have another idea for that.
Thanks a lot,

That's the only supported installation. It can be done in other ways, but you have to squeeze it a bit. Doable but not fun (trust me, I know - been there, done that!).

But if you've got WMQ installed in the global zone, why would you want to install it in a non-global zone? That's the point of zoning as I understand it. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Hello,
it's ok for your answer, i must copy the MQSeries zone per example because on others zones are running others critical applications, so on my servers are partionned with more zones which have their own applications.
But i have read all functionnalities of ZFS and i think it is possible with the ZFS command : zfs send and zfs receive.
More examples on Sun forum explain copies of a zone to others remote servers .
Thanks a lot
bye. |

As I said other, unsupported, methods are doable but not fun. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Hello,
I have read all these pages about your last message.
Has someone try to install MQSeries with that method (describe in next sentences).
Does it reall work for the installation, could you tell me about your experience for that.
Thanks bye
-------------------------------------
Approach: Installing WMQ into a non-global 'Whole Root' zone
Overview
This is the most straight-forward non-global zone option. It allows WMQ to be used from within the zone, but puts nothing into the global zone that would cause it to visible outside of the zone in which it is installed. Installs in different zones would not share anything.
It is unappealing in some ways because it requires such a large zone - the default (having only a subset of the root) is to have much smaller zones.
Work required
Problem 1: The WebSphere MQ postinstall script attempts to verify if kernel parameters are set correctly. Commands used to do this are not available within non-global zones, and fail with error messages displayed at install-time
## Executing postinstall script.
Insufficient privileges to load a module
Insufficient privileges to load a module
Insufficient privileges to load a module
Workaround: These error messages can be ignored. This occurs post-install, and does not effect the install itself. Kernel parameters should be verified manually using guidance available in the WMQ v6.0 product README file.

Doing this will require:
- a lot of space
- changes to the default zone configuration
- reliance on the admins setting kernel parameters correctly (as the script can't check them)
I'm told it's possible to "clone" zones; my experience is it never works properly. I didn't do it, and it's fair to say the admins were new at Solaris zones themselves so they could have been doing anything.
We abandoned this, mostly for space constraints, and had some success installing into non-global sparse zones. Requires a lot of non-fun dancing but managed to script it. Biggest problems we found were setting users up correctly to use WMQ (path & permission problems) and no-one else really understood the concept.
This last left us installing everything into the global zone, which everyone understood, and walking away. The site in question didn't use SSL so GSKit was left where it fell.
My 2 cents, other methods and experiences are equally valid. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Hello,
thanks for all these answers.
So I think it's better to install MQSeries on Global Zones as you said. On Solaris Forums more topics said it's better because with non-globales zones you must adapt, change the rights and ...and... and...
My other question is : i think it possible to copy the global zone from one to ohers Servers (on the global zone), but my Solaris guys are not so happy to do that, and on the Solaris Forums i cannot found any real answer.
What is your opinion for that point.
Thanks for your help

I was told it was possible, it was attempted and we ended up with all sort of odd problems and stability issues. As I said, the Solaris admins were new at this and I have little enough Solaris admin on previous non-zoned Solaris to comment one way or the other on what was happening apart from "it went wierd and no one knew why".
As I said, in the end we shrugged, installed it into the dozen or so global zones we had and walked away. Everything worked, the admins were happy, I was happy and management was happy. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

IMHO this is a key point - if you now insist on copying the global zones, and there are any problems of any kind, the admins will throw their hands up in horror and say, "well, we said this was a bad idea - it's all his fault!" even if the problem is nothing to do with zones, cloning or WMQ! _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
