Hi,
We are looking at implementing a MQ monitoring tool in our environment. We have about 150 queue managers and we need to monitor more than 10K MQ objects. Some of the monitoring tool I'm aware of right now is,
contact admin - M6
IBM Tivoli - candle
MQ software - qpasa
Are there any other tools in the market?
Can you share some of your experience with these tools.
Thx. |

I am using both Tivoli and QPasa.
Personally I find the setup to be easier for QPasa.
However QPasa requires a positive setup whereas Tivoli does the "neg option setup" i.e. all queues are monitored unless you exclude them.
The question is how big / unmanageable will your history database grow to be??

We use QPASA and are very happy with it. _________________ Peter Potkay

I used contact admin way back in 2000 and it was clunky. But I have MQ buddies that tell me it is much more elegant now. It worked fine, was just a little hard to configure.
I've been using QPasa for several years and am happy with it. fjb_saper makes a really good point, though, so be sure and consider the differences between the two types of setup (affirmative vs. neg option).
Whatever you choose, be sure your management does not underestimate the effort required for the initial installation, configuration and customization. It is not a trivial effort, though it is well worth the effort! |

I second that...
Depending on the size of your environment, the initial set up can be a long and tedious task. I currently use Qpasa for MQ monitoring and I am very happy with it. Granted, I have no experience with any other tools...but with the size of the environment I manage, I often find myself thinking there are certain interfaces in Qpasa which could been better designed to make the life of those with larger environments -(approximately 300+ queue managers with 400+ queue each) - easier. |

Our environment is pretty similar to yours. We have about 200+ queue managers with more than 4K objects in some of them.
I'm looking for a tool that is simple to install and set up. I know that it is a big task to accomplish, but, relatively one tool should be simpler than the other. So, I want to find out which one would be better for us.
Thnx |

Talking about the qpasa interface have you guys talked to their support about scripting?
They have some interesting scripting at the server and at the agent level... _________________ MQ & Broker admin |

You mean, like firing a script as a result of an event? Or do they have new tricks?
We've got licenses on the way, but the moment, I haven't anything to play with in QP..... I don't know what v4.x is offering.

No what I mean is running mqsc to extract all the qnames you want monitored and creating a script with those that you pass to the agent. No need to go through the gui and click them one by one...
Same thing on the server for history, monitoring etc... Possibly even same thing for setting up your custom views etc... Talk to them. _________________ MQ & Broker admin |

That's seems to be really interesting. I'm going to try to arrange a POC in our environment for QP.
Any thoughts on M6 / omegamon?

Shirley if your handy with writing Unix or Windows scripts you can do a lot without going thru the GUI. One of my teammates has a knack for this and we have some jobs that run every night to do things like automatically associate any new local queues with our standard alerts, to automatically add them to History, etc.
Of course I don't think we should have to script this. I have submitted a requirement for "Super" Association rules in QPASA. For instance, I would like to build a rule in the GUI that says any queue of Usage Type "XMITQ" automatically gets placed in the following alerts: X, Y, Z. Or any queue of type Local gets automatically added to History and to a >80% full email. etc. If QPASA offered this it would make it so much easier for QPASA Admins to insure each and every MQ object is consistently monitored in their environment. We have thousands of queues and its a tought to be 100% certain every q is monitored exactly as you want. This would help. Regardless, QPASA does a fine job as is very us and we have a decent size MQ topology. I know there are much bigger MQ shops out there that use QPASA too.
You should also take advantage of the free QPASA Healthchecks they now offer. It provides a ton of useful and interesting info. You can then send that in to their support for a report card that offers suggestions on how to optimize your QPASA infrastructure. One of the neat things this health check does is provide a list of all the objects and what each one is associated with, and a converse list that shows each rule and everything associated with it. Good stuff you can do yourself without having to send it in for the report card part.
We are at QPASA 4.0.0.180 and a fair amount of the bugs and suggestions we've are fixed / incorporated. We didn't have any major problems upgrading. _________________ Peter Potkay

We have just updated Tivoli Omegamon from Candle.
I find it very easy to install, configure and use. |

Guys, How about Wily/BMC Patrol for WebSphere MQ?
I'm sure someone might have used wily/patrol before and how good is it with MQ monitoring? We are planning to evaluate one of these tools and purchase the licenses if good enough. But thought to get an advise from you guys first. |
