We are looking at buying a version control product for the broker V6. I am hoping that some one can share their experience. We have briefly looked at CVS and PVCS , they both provided the check-in and check out capability and some standard code control functions. But what we really want is some kind of automatic impact alert or reporting. For example, if a developer modified a flow or subflow or a message set that can affect a number of bar files used in production, we like to be alerted and even better is ask if we want to update and redeploy or not. I am in the process of reading the documents from these vendors. But if some one has real experience that they can share, it may save us some time to sort out the real finctionality from within the marketing statements in the doc. I also heard that IBM clear case can do more. But our shop is not true blue. I always need some good reason to suggest any IBM solutions. |

I have worked with subversion which I found better than CVS . I don't think it gives alerts that way you want it (Atlease we never used it ) but it has ways for synching the developer toolkit with the repository and vice versa. it also allows you to deploy versions from earlier tags.

I've had nothing but trouble with PVCS, every time I've tried to use it.
I consider it ... unlikely... you will get the kind of in-depth impact analysis on Message Broker code from anyone other than IBM that you are looking for.
I make no claims as to what ClearCase may or may not do. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

I've used PVCS (pain in the neck), ClearCase (solid if unexciting) and CVS (recently). Also ENDEVOR on a mainframe (which I doubt anyone's heard of ). None of them will do that sort of impact analysis out of the box, though PVCS & ClearCase will produce code reference which can be used for impact analysis. CVS may do this but we've not found the function yet and are considering building something into the side of it.
IMHO you don't want to update or redeploy in the face of this kind of change. You want to evaluate the change, work out if some of the affected modules need a cascading change and then redeploy once you're happy. I can think of a couple of scenarios where a "Sub flow has changed, redeploy affected flows Y/N" dialog box could be retitled "Initiate self destruct of system Y/N"
My 2 cents, other optinions are equally valid, etc, etc. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

We're very happy with subversion and subclipse.
Although we are not scripting any of the operations, you probably could should you be so inclined script your message set imports, script your bar file creations.
We are scripting deployment operations and your deployments...
The only downside so far: You will require bar file creation scripting to automatically have the subversion version number in the deployable...
As for the impact analysis -- don't think there is one.
Could all be automated through scripting a new full deployment... with all the dependencies...
