I am currently using MQ version 5.3. I am planning to migrate my operating systems from
1)windows 2000 to windows 2003 R2 server
2) windows NT to windows 2003 R2 server

a)what are the impacts i should be considering after the migration?
b)Does migration from windows NT to different OS affect the access control lists?

I can't answer your question directly, and it doesn't appear anyone else is, but I would try this approach:

1) Download VMWare Server from www.vmware.com (it's free).
2) Install it on an approapriate desktop or server (needs to have lots of RAM, CPU and Disk).
3) Grab a copy of the "from" OS and install and run under VMWare Server host. You can use a CD or an ISO image.
4) Install and configure MQ 5.3 on it.
5) Snapshot the image.
6)Upgrade the "from" OS to the "to" OS.
7)Check MQ for functionality (validate channels, gets/puts, make sure queue data came across, etc.)
Revert snapshot if there are problems or to try another scenaro.

Do this before you go any further. It will help you to find the big problems, and makes roll-backs and retries a breeze.

Also, open an ETR with IBM and ask this question to them.

These methods won't find all the possible problems, but will catch the big, glaring ones and will give you a level of comfort with what you are doing.

Windows 2003 Server is NOT supported by WMQ v5.3. Please read the WMQ for Windows Quick Beginning Guide.

Also, IBM is ending support for WMQ v5.3 in September 2007. So, why bother installing v5.3, install WMQ v6.

Yes, you will lose your ACLs, but do a search on 'AMQOAMD' because you can dump them out (like MS03 for MQ objects).

Roger is right...best to go to MQ 6.0 as soon as possible.

Second issue - moving from NT 4 to Windows 2003 is a very big jump and I wouldn't do it if I had a choice. I would find a way to do a fresh install of Windows 2003 and MQ 6.0 and move my objects/queue data rather than upgrade that way.

Even if Microsoft says it will work, I wouldn't trust it. NT 4 and Win2003 are too far apart.

I don't know what your budget and technical resources are, but I can tell you from experience, upgrade Windows from one OS to another is problematic at best, and a nightmare at worst.

Best to go with a clean install, if at all possible.

Win 2000 to Win 2003 isn't as big a migration, but I would go with a clean install in that situation as well.
