I'm so embarrassed at having to post this, but I'm getting increasingly desperate.

A very difficult but important customer that I support have a business critical application using MQ 5.1 on a Solaris 2.6 server.

After literally years of arguments, I'm finally being allowed to upgrade it. I'm refusing to go past 5.2 CSD08, as 5.3 was never certified to run on Solaris 2.6 (minimum version supported for 5.3 = solaris 2.7), and we are trying to force them to address other application dependencies so they will finally allow us to move to a higher version of Solaris. If I went to 5.3 on this Solaris 2.6 antique, I figure I'll be introducing a solution that has never been officially certified by IBM to work so I'll be responsible if there are any problems with it. If they have any problems after going to 5.2, it's still the customers fault for not giving me a platform where I can bring MQ to a level where IBM can provide support.

However, the 5.1 install was originally done over five years ago by people no longer with my company, and I can not find source code for 5.1 (and CSD07) for Solaris 2.6 any where!

Can any one suggest where I could beg, buy, borrow, or steal this? For obvious reasons, I'm reluctant to do an upgrade on production systems where I can't do a backout without doing a full system restore.

Any assistance gratefully received.

Also, a much simpler question - I'm assuming 5.2 will need to be installed by root, not mqm? I've only ever installed 5.3 on UNIX, and the 5.2 Quick Beginners guide (my only real documentation) says that you must add root to the mqm group, but doesn't specifically state it has to be run as root as far as I can see. Our solaris admins will probably want something more definitive before giving me the root password.

Thanks again.

By source code, I'm assuming you mean installation media?

I'd like to congratulate you on upgrading probably the last copy of 5.1 in active service - who ARE these people?

(Don't answer that with a name - I might do business with them and become alarmed )

Having got my head around the concept of "upgrading" to 5.2.8, I don't remember the last time I saw 5.1 media that hadn't already been converted into a coaster. In the event media is not available IMHO (and disenting opinions welcomed) you shouldn't need a full system restore - you should be able to restore the mqm mount point. Will you be using the support pack to independently save queue definitions.

If I remember correctly (and it's been a while) the install is run as mqm not root. I think.

(Upgrading to 5.2.8? I'll never complain about being on MQSI 2.1 again!)

Sorry to be so vague. Hope you can find what you're looking for.

Yep.

You wouldn't believe me if I told you. Someone who should know better.

I love my job. I really do.

There's actually a number of servers with queue managers that are identical apart from the actual instance names. The Quick Beginnings Install Guide for 5.2 recommends uninstalling 5.1 via the O/S (pkgrm command) and installing 5.2 as a fresh install. Therefore, if the new installation does not pick up the existing queue manager files when I go to 5.2.8, I'll just run the configuration scripts again to recreate the queue manager with queues and appropriate settings.

However, as 5.1 will be zapped using pkgrm, I assumed that just restoring the mqm mount point would be insufficent?

As I said, the manual is unclear. Either I'm blind (always a possibility), or it doesn't specifically mention what to use, other than ensuring root is part of the mqm group. I think I might be better off assuming it's root?

Thanks. I appreciate the helpful advice, and the lack of scorn directed at me personally for being in this position!

v5.3 and v6 are installed as root.

I wouldn't try installing v5.2 or v5.1 as anything else.

Cheers. That's what my gut's been telling me, but I wanted some independent advice.

Not exactly the most innovative of environments, is it? And as back-leveled as everything is, you can almost forget about vendor support on practically any of it.

Vendor support? What's that?

The only support this particular environment has are my own personal skills and my ability to google when that's not sufficient...

As a wise man almost once said "Let he that is not using MQSI 2.1 cast the first scorn"

Being the ultimate pack rat that I am, I was intrigued by your request. I dug through my stashes and found two CDs with MQSeries v5.1. Alas, they are for HP-UX 10.20 and HP-UX 11.0. Maybe someone "pack rattier" than I will come through for you. Good luck.

Ditto. Thanks, guys.

Now I just need someone to decide that 5.1 Coffee Coaster they've been cherishing for years deserves a new home.

A man can dream...

pkgadd itself needs root - it is not an MQSeries requirement

The uninstall will not remove the queue manager definitions in /var/mqm but you should back it up in case you need to revert to the earlier release.

That's right, there are symlinks in /usr that are created by the package scripts.

Also, it *may* be possible for you to download v5.1 from IBM, if the customer has a current Passport Advantage account. I'm guessing they *don't*, but...

Regardless, I'd think you can request duplicate media, even if you have to pay extra for it.

We're actually trying to get them from IBM (our first port of call long before bothering people here) but there seems to be a lack of 5.1.7 for Solaris installation CDs even there. We haven't given up on this avenue, but it's not looking likely to be honest...
