I am trying to find out why a listener would not start. i type in command - start listener(system.default.listener.tcp) and then it tells me that the request to start WebSphere MQ Listener has been accepted. Yet, when I display lsstatus(*) there are no returns. I need to figure out if I can view active listeners or why this listener is not starting. Please help.

You are trying to start THIS listener?

AMQ8630: Display listener information details.
LISTENER(SYSTEM.DEFAULT.LISTENER.TCP) CONTROL(MANUAL)
TRPTYPE(TCP) PORT(0)
IPADDR( ) BACKLOG(0)
DESCR( ) ALTDATE(2006-07-27)
ALTTIME(10.10.52)

You need to define your OWN listener with a non-zero port # and start that ,,,,
