You could have also added a COMMIT after your put instead of removing Syncpoint.
It's a typical problem with JMS, where the sender and receiver are using the same transaction.
That was going to be one of my guesses - that you weren't committing the Request before you tried to get the Reply - so the other side was never receiving the Request.
