For training and testing of some system management scripts, I'd like to "force" the generation of an .FDC file. Can anyone suggest a "gentle" way to cause an FDC file to be generated? I know sending a kill signal to a listener will do the trick but I don't consider kill to be very gentle <grin>

don't know if it's be gentle but if you hammer the qmgr with large messages and you're using a small circular log you'll get an FDCs

If you are on Unix, you can set your kernel parameters low and you'll get an FDC. You can also try running MQ java on AIX. You'll get a segment 8 FDC.
