Regarding the max handles of a queue manager, is it that a thread can have a max of 256(default) connections open at a single point of time?? It can open mutiple queues, but it can open only 256 max and it has to close the others to open the new ones right??? We are having a .NET application connecting to MQ 5.3 CSD08 on win 2003 and we are getting this 2017 error and i have checked the application log and i see that a particular thread has almost 256 connections open to maybe 40 queues and never closed any and i think thats why it threw the error 2017, but my developers argue that the having 256 open connections to different queues is not a concern and they say that if you have those 256 to one queue then its a problem. But i beleive that no matter how many queues, a thread can have only 256 open connections in our case. Do you agree with me??? Thanks!!! |

Well, you are right, but instead of showing your developers this reply by some doofus with a picture of Kramer as his avatar, why not look it up in the manual and show them IBM's response? (hint: its in the App Prog. Ref. Manual)
Who knows, you might find something like this!

This is the maximum number of open handles that any one task can use concurrently. Each successful MQOPEN call for a single queue (or for an object that is not a queue) uses one handle. That handle becomes available for reuse when the object is closed. However, when a distribution list is opened, each queue in the distribution list is allocated a separate handle, and so that MQOPEN call uses as many handles as there are queues in the distribution list. This must be taken into account when deciding on a suitable value for MaxHandles.

Nooooo, Peter now stop, your just being silly. I'm sure IBM never intended for anyone to actually read or use their WMQ documentation. Why would they bother to offer it up for free.
Perhaps if they tried to keep it all secret a group of hackers would be forced to post the documentation on web sites that would be more accessible to the huddled masses. _________________ Yes, I am an agent of Satan but my duties are largely ceremonial. |

Geeze.
You'd think I'd been doing nothing else the last three years, if you were to look at my post count. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

I thought you got that by posting about current events on the General Discussion board. _________________ Yes, I am an agent of Satan but my duties are largely ceremonial. |
