On other platforms (non-AS/400) you can use the MQSERVER environment variable to control the server connection. Is there any similar way to do this on the 400? i.e. I don't want to connect to the default server, AND, I don't want to code the queue manager name in the MQCONN call.

The MQSERVER variable is honored by the MQClient code only. There is no MQClient support on AS/400, hence no MQSERVER variable.
You have to either specify the queue manager name on the MQCONN call or be happy with the default queue manager.
You, of course, don't have to (and shouldn't) hardcode any MQ object names in your applications, but instead read them from a condiguration file/database. iSeries experts out there (I am anything else but that ) may be able to give you hints and tips better than I am.
Cheers,
Stefan
