Can anybody tell me if it is all right installing only the MQ Explorer from the Websphere MQ v6.0.0.0, to a working version?
The machine has all the prerequisite software installed.
The installed version of Websphere MQ is 5.3.0.9 and is working without any problems. But I am eager to try new versions, so to see how they work. If I had another machine I would have used it.
I have read the whole installation manual and know that while upgrading I will lose my settings - Configuration Managers, Brokers and of course the 'msc' configuration of the existing MQ Explorer.
Will I lose anything, apart from the MQ Explorer configuration, if I install only the Explorer? |

It should work..
It also should work to install Explorer on another machine, migrate the features and plugins directly into the eclipse install, rather than through the Links folder, and then copy the Eclipse install to any machine. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Thanks jefflowrey, but in the process of partial upgrade I came across the following text:
...
Features to install:
MQ Explorer
Features to remove:
Server
Windows Client
Java Messaging
Development Toolkit
, and have another question: Do you have any idea what does it mean 'Features to remove'? |

Yeah.
It means that it won't install any piece of v6 without uninstalling all of v5.
At least by default - and I don't know how to correct it. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Also, you shouldn't actually lose your v5 queue managers if you do the full upgrade.
The only thing that really needs to be migrated is any SSL configuration.
So your ConfigMgrs and Brokers and etc will be fine - but you will lose your MMC. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

The thing is that I am a real bit new to Websphere MQ (1 month) and at certain points I am not sure if I will lose something I will need later.
Now after I have installed the MQ Explorer, in it there are NO Queue Managers.
On the File menu there is something called 'Open External File'. Is this option for restoring Queue Managers' definitions, or will I lose my Managers if I redefine them again, now from the new Explorer? |

I think this is because it uninstalled all of v5 before it installed v6. And you only installed the v6 explorer...
This is what I would do now. Copy <MQ install root>/eclipse and the WebSphere Eclipse SDK folder to a different location on your hard drive. These are the two pieces of the v6 Explorer.
Uninstall v6.
Reinstall v5.3.
Confirm that you still have your queue managers.
Then you can merge the plugins and features folders of the EclipseSDK and the MQ explorer that you previously saved, and remove the Links directory. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Now I am using MQ v6 and would recommend it.
About the setup - I have saved all my work (messages, queues etc.), uninstalled MQ 5.3 and installed MQ 6, and had to delete and create Configuration Manager and Broker. Also you will have to create again the execution groups.
Everything should take you no more than 1 hour, depending on the machine.
In the new explorer you can browse the whole queue. The MQ manager settings are better suited.
I have expected IBM to implement a feature so you can select the range of messages you want to delete, but they didn't.
If you want an useful tool for it, read here - WMQ Tool . |

If you expect it to be based on positional arithmetic its easy ==> it does not make sense. Not on a living qmgr. The moment you look at deleting the sequence has shifted and msg n is no longer the same. If you want to do positional you'd have to have the queue open in exclusive mode....
If you expect it to be based on messageid ... the mechanism provides unicity base on qmgr name + date timestp + processor info or some other such stuff (nic card # ...etc...) So your number sequence is discrete and you cannot guarantee it either...
Enjoy |
