Does this mean NT (including 2000 and XP) is "out of luck"?
Is there any place where I can get a sample code for handling MQGMO_SET_SIGNAL with C++ so I can do some testing?

Are you on a platform that supports MQGMO_SET_SIGNAL?
If you could use this option MQ would signal your aplication when a message becomes available rather than entering a blocking wait.
