Hi MQ administrator hot-shots,
Windows MQ Explorer complains about "unsupported platform
type" when it is connected up to a queue manager on OS/390.
What is the exact reason for this inability to administer OS/390?
Is it because MQ Explorer can only generate PCF 'binary' commands,
rather than the PCF 'escape' commands that are required for the
OS/390 command processor?
Is there a secret switch in MQ Explorer to enable it do this this ?
(Like the -x switch on runmqsc)

No way !! 
MQExplore don't support OS/390 (because OS/390 don't support PCF commands).
You can use supportpack MO71 instead (I do).

The PCF server missing on OS/390 is a long standing and annoying fault.
IBM's response seems to be that because you can buy one (from contact admin) they won't produce one.
This is not good enough. If the "premier" platform for MQSeries doesn't have a basic feature as standard then they are letting customers down. |

Who came first, MQSC or PCF and what is basic and what is enhanced 
I guess at some time in the future the product on the different platforms will get closer, but never the same. Just think of the QSG, which will not be available on some platforms (I guess  ).

The OS/390 command processor does not accept any form of PCF
commands. It accepts an ordinary plain text command message in
SYSTEM.COMMAND.INPUT and it generates
a number of plain text reply messages on the nominated reply queue,
which includes various CSQ9nnnx prefixed messages.
The distributed platform command processors all accept PCF command
messages, and generate MQCFxx structures in the reply messages.
There is an ESCAPE type of PCF which can be used to submit
plain text commands, and the replies come back in MQCFH structures
as strings.
The total imcompatibility between OS/390 and distributed command
processors is disappointing.

| Yes, it is disappointing. However I don't think we will see full PCF support in MQ on z/OS in the future. For legal reasons in the US, IBM would have to make it a seperately billable optional feature. I don't think they'll bother. In practice, most z/OS sites will depend on a tool to shield themselves from the differences between the platforms, so it's a worry for the third party vendors, not for the customers. |
