I have a customer that would like to make use of QSG. It's been over 12 years since I was involved in a QSG setup.
They want me to setup QSG with two mqms on the same LPAR. At a previous site I always had a multi LPAR setup with QSG. Obviously, they aren't really exploiting the real usefulness of a HA setup with QSG. But I'm doing what their asking.
1) I assume it's possible to setup QSG on a single LPAR with two mqms?
2) Would anything odd happen in this type of configuration?
Thanks for any tips. |

The first question that comes to my mind is, where is the Coupling Facility in this set up? In addition to this single LPAR, you must have a CF right?
Cheers,

I did ask IBM and they did say this is possible as far as creating QSG on a single LPAR.
Yes, there is a Coupling Facility. DB2 is making use of it.
At the moment I'm just following through the manual on how to configure all the pieces. Can you recommend a good naming convent for the QSG names? AS I mentioned they currently have
PRD1 as the Prod LPAR
TST2 as there QA Developemnt LPAR
QAL1 as their sandbox LPAR |

You already have a CF - good - where is it? Is it hardware or on another LPAR?
Anyway, if your question is "can I have two members of the same QSG running on the same LPAR?" then yes. Remember that you might want to have a VIPA for each, because they won't be able to bind to the same IP address for listening on when running on the same LPAR.
If your question is "can I create a QSG if I only have one LPAR?" then I'm not so sure. I don't know whether the CF can run in the same LPAR. However, if you already have a CF, then wherever it is, that question is already answered. And perhaps this second interpretation of your original question is not an accurate interpretation.
Wrt naming conventions for QSGNames - I've never seen anyone cover that. I would be inclined to take whatever 3-char prefix I imagine you might have for queue managers along with a number to give you queue manager names, and replace the number with a letter G perhaps for a group name. Just an idea though. I would recommend a 4-char QSG name even though you are allowed less. It's just a bit weird if you don't. I think there are @ symbols that go in place of the missing char or something like that, so use all four letters you have.
Cheers,

It's been a while, but:
Coupling Facility Control Code (CFCC) is licensed internal code (LIC). CFCC runs in a dedicated LPAR or in a Coupling Facility (CF) or both.
Multiple z/OS qmgrs in a single LPAR or across multiple LPARS can be part of a QSG.
For testing purposes many shops run new CFCC code in an LPAR before deploying it to a CF. Same when modifying and testing structure definitions.
For high-availability, big shops run duplicated CF's. To reduce cost a bit, a shop can run CFCC code in an LPAR instead of a 2nd CF.
