Use case : Migrating web services(REST) hosted in Tomcat server to IIB server.

Can anyone please explain the advantages and disadvantages of hosting web services(REST) in IIB as against tomcat. If possible can we please discuss about these topics,

- Performance
- Load balancing
- Code maintenance
- Web services : Versioning

Thanks in advance

It's a lot more work to do message transformation and interface to a lot of external systems from Tomcat.

If you're migrating (rather than planning to migrate or deciding if you should migrate) REST services from Tomcat to IIB, why do the advantages or disadvantages matter?

Or to ask the question a different way:

If your site has REST services running in Tomcat, why did your site buy IIB? What was the cost / benefit case for this fairly expensive piece of IBM software when compared to the low cost of Tomcat?

IIB was bought for a different purpose but now planning to move the existing web services in tomcat. So just wanted to know the pros and cons of doing so. If anyone can help me compare web services hosted in tomcat against that of IIB, it would be great. Also, if anyone uses IIB for hosting a lot web services, Please post the challenges/issues of doing so, if any.

Thanks in advance!

It's the same as hosting "conventional" web services in IIB as opposed to a standalone container, or processing files or MQ messages with IIB rather than other methods. That's why I asked about the cost benefit case for purchasing IIB; whatever led your site to buy IIB rather than stick with other solutions can be applied here, with the added advantages that you don't have to justify the cost of purchase.

Who is doing the planning to migrate to IIB?

What is the business requirement behind that?

Who is doing the migration of development artifacts (code, json schemas, etc etc etc)?

If the plan is to migrate, what value is there in asking about the pros and cons? Isn't the decision already made?

Ok let me put this question in a different way. Ignore the migration plan.

Can anyone recommend IIB as a container for hosting web services. Is it a wise decision to load a bunch of web services into IIB. If not, then please list out the challenges/issues involved.

Yes. This works very well. IIB has a lot of tooling to support web services.

Yes. This works very well. IIB has a lot of tooling to support web services, and scales well.

It's obviously very different to hosting web services on other platforms. Which can introduce some challenges. As it does with hosting other non ws materials.
