Well, this will not be the first install of WebSphere MQ, so yes you need to use crtmqpkg.
WMQ 7.0.1 needs to be at a certain level to be compatible with another instance of WMQ > 7.0.1.latest. The WMQ 7.0.1 will/must be the default/primary instance, so first ensure you have applied the latest maintenance before doing anything else. |

I know this is an "old" thread but I've recently come across something related.
I found in my testing that installing the base MQ 7.5 on top of MQ 7.0.1.7 and higher worked fine with no need for crtmqpkg. However, it seems that if you have any pre-7.0.1.6 fixpacks installed they will prevent 7.5 from installing, even if they have been superseded by a supported fixpack level.
I realise that the manual says to use crtmqpkg if it isn't the first MQ installation. However some months ago I raised an issue about this wording in the manual saying I believed that it should say "if this is not the first 7.5 installation..." and this was accepted at the time by IBM, although I notice that the text was never actually changed.
So I wonder, does everyone use crtmqpkg for 7.1/7.5 if they already have 7.0.1 installed?
Cheers,

Installing MQ 7.5 on top of MQ 7.0.1.n would still be the first install of MQ 7.5. It is replacing MQ 7.0.1.
When your migration is a replacement, you might consider uninstalling the old MQ version first. Then check to ensure all the files are really gone. You might find they are not for different reasons like: An APAR was installed and the uninstall does not take account for that.
Once you have a clean install location, install MQ 7.5 and when it starts, the Qmgr should migrate just fine. |

Sorry, not clear in my post. By "on top of" I meant "in addition to" so a side-by-side install with the 7.0.1 system still available.
Whilst there may be something in pre-7.0.1.6 MQ that actively conflicts with 7.5 the actual error I see is purely some conflict of RPM pre-reqs that the older fixpacks had and that prevents a later version of MQ being installed.
Anyway, I raised a PMR with IBM to clarify and they seem to be sticking to the line that crtmqpkg is required for all subsequent 7.5 installations so I'll have to go along with that I guess. |
