I apologize if this is an odd question but in the hours spent googling and reading the documentation, I have not been able to find out if what I have been asked to do is even possible.

My manager asked me to evaluate Websphere MQ and to design a proof of concept application to demonstrate its effectiveness. My manager has some knowledge of Websphere MQ and has some very definite ideas about how he wants it to work. One of his assumptions is that Websphere MQ can be used to execute a job/program/script when it receives a message. I believe that he is mistaken about this "feature" but cannot find any evidence to either support or deny that it can be used like this.

Can Websphere MQ be set up to automatically run something when it receives a message?

I have proposed creating an application that will get messages from a queue and then execute the appropriate job/script/program based on the content of that message but he believes that this is not necessary because, in his mind, Websphere MQ should be able to do this already. So, who is right? The lowly programmer asked to build something with the tools or the manager who has only read about how the tool works?

No he isn't.

Look up "triggering" in the InfoCenter.

Alarmingly, the manager. That I have lived to see this day.....

The feature your manager is talking about is known as "Triggering".

There is an existing Trigger Monitor that will monitor an initiation queue and launch the process defined in the message written to the initiation queue.

MQ will automatically write messages to an initiation queue based on the configuration of an application queue and of any associated process objects defined to the queue manager.

Thank you both for your replies. I will read through the documentation for Triggering.
