It all depends. With WMB connecting you cannot scale the DB independently from WMB...

No. But it happens a lot. All companies cannot afford to follow all principles.

But this is a complicated question. You could have a broker running in remote Adapter Deployment mode to underscore that you are following certain achitectural principles even if you are using Message Broker product to connect to application databases.
